Jade is a grey-brown, long-haired Persian: a round, flat face, small wide-set ears, a pale ruff and a tail like a plume.
The app was first made for him, and he is still in it. His sitting silhouette is the icon, and he is the cat you meet before you add your own. On the Mac, he is the pet that comes with the app.

Why a jade
In Chinese, 玉 — jade — is something you keep close and hand down: precious because it lasts.
Jade's one accent colour is celadon, the glaze potters first fired to imitate jade. Everything else is washi — unbleached paper and pale ink — so nothing on the page competes with the cat.
03Now, yours
Now, yours
Add your own cat and the app becomes about your cat: the name, the look, the voice. Every diary line is your cat speaking; on the Mac, your cat is the one walking the Dock.
