Privacy Policy

Jade is an app for iPhone and Mac made by Henry Chen, an independent developer (“we”, “us”), who is responsible for your data here. This policy covers the Jade apps, the Jade+ subscription, Jade's server at api.jadethecat.com and this website.

What you log about your cat is kept on your devices and in your own iCloud, in Apple's CloudKit, not on our server: the cat's profile and photo, the diary and your mood corrections, meals, weight, care logs, reminders, albums and photos, and the pixel twin. It sits in your iCloud's private database, which we can't read.

When you share a cat, Apple's iCloud sharing lets the people you invite read and add to that cat's records in your iCloud: other owners see everything, the diary included; carers see the care records but not the diary.

Your own name and photo in Settings stay in your iCloud and on your device, and are never sent to our server.

On the Mac, Jade finds your cats in the same iCloud and draws them there. To walk your windows and time your breaks, it notices, on the Mac only, whether you're idle or in a call or a Focus, which app is in front and where its windows are. None of that leaves the Mac. The older Mac download, Jade.dmg, works offline and sends nothing anywhere.

Jade's server, at api.jadethecat.com, handles only what the features you use need, and uses it only to run them, keep Jade+ working on your devices and keep the service safe:

• A random identifier Jade makes for each device on first launch, not tied to your name or Apple Account, so Jade+ can be checked on each of your devices.
• Jade+ purchases: the App Store's signed record of your subscription when you buy or restore it. We keep its transaction ID, plan, status and expiry, and which of your devices use it (up to ten). We never see your payment details.
• Photos for a Jade+ feature, when Apple Intelligence can't do the job (see the next section). A photo is held in memory for that one request, passed to Anthropic and then dropped: never stored and never logged.
• If you sign in with Apple, for friends, messages and shared cats: the identifier Apple gives Jade for you, the display name you choose and, if Apple shares your email, a masked form of it and a one-way hash for finding friends, never the address itself. We also keep, encrypted, a token Apple gives us so that deleting your account can end Jade's Sign in with Apple.
• Friends and messages: your friend list, friend requests, and the messages you send and receive, kept so they can reach the other person. Looking up a friend by email sends the address to our server to be hashed and matched, and it isn't kept.
• Shared cats: who owns or looks after each shared cat, the invitations (an invitation link keeps only a one-way hash of its secret part, works once and expires after seven days), iCloud sharing links with the cat's name taken out, and a short note of each care event, what kind, when and by whom, so everyone can be told. Never your notes, portions or weights.
• Notifications: if you allow them, your device's push token, so we can tell you when someone logs care for a cat you share.

Mood reading, the cat-voice diary and calorie estimates are Jade+ features. Jade first asks Apple Intelligence, on your device or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, which Apple builds so that nobody, Apple included, can see what it handles. When Apple Intelligence can't do the job, as with photos on iOS 26, Jade asks our server, which asks Anthropic's Claude.

Before a photo leaves your iPhone, Jade makes it smaller and strips its location. For a diary line, our server sends Anthropic only the moods, how happy overall and the voice you chose: no photo, no name, no records.

Anthropic handles this as our service provider, under its commercial terms: it doesn't train its models on it, and deletes it within 30 days unless it's flagged under Anthropic's usage policy. See Anthropic's privacy policy.

A mood reading is a guess, and you can correct it. Your corrections stay in your iCloud.

• No ads and no tracking: Jade doesn't follow you across other companies' apps or websites.
• No analytics or crash-reporting kits in the apps, and no analytics on this website.
• We don't sell your data or share it for advertising, and we don't use it to train AI models.
• Nobody at Jade reads your diary: it isn't on our server.

jadethecat.com uses no cookies, analytics or ads. The cat who walks its pages keeps his mood and your settings for him in your browser's local storage, and they never leave your browser. Cloudflare, which serves the site, handles the usual details of each request, such as your IP address, to deliver it and protect it from abuse. An invitation page uses its link only to hand the invitation to Jade on your iPhone.

These services process data for Jade, each under its own terms and privacy policy:

• Apple: iCloud and CloudKit, Sign in with Apple, the App Store, push notifications and Apple Intelligence. Apple's privacy policy.
• Anthropic, in the United States: Claude, for Jade+ features when Apple Intelligence can't do them. Anthropic's privacy policy.
• Tencent Cloud: the server Jade's server and its database run on, in Singapore.
• Cloudflare: this website and the jadethecat.com domain. Cloudflare's privacy policy.

• Photos for a Jade+ feature: for that one request only.
• Your account, friends, messages and shared-cat records: until you delete your account. Invitations stop working once used or after seven days.
• Jade+ records: while the subscription lasts, and afterwards as the record of the purchase. Deleting your account unlinks them from you.
• Push tokens: until you turn notifications off, the token expires, or you delete your account.
• Server logs, which record requests but never photos, diary lines or message text: only as long as needed to run the service and keep it safe.
• Backups of our database are made daily and the last seven kept, so deleted data leaves them within about a week.

• Export: on iPhone, Settings → Privacy & export saves everything logged for a cat as one file. Photos aren't in the file; they stay in your iCloud and your photo library.
• Delete a cat from its page: its diary, care logs, albums and twin are deleted from your device and your iCloud. If the cat has other owners, they get seven days to keep it first.
• Delete your account in Settings → Account → Delete account. It erases your account from our server, with your friends, messages and shared-cat links, and ends Jade's Sign in with Apple. Your cats' records were never on our server and stay in your iCloud until you delete them.
• Deleting your account doesn't cancel Jade+, which belongs to your Apple Account: cancel it there, as Apple's guide shows.
• Uninstalling Jade clears it from that device. What's in your iCloud stays until you delete the cats, or Jade's data under iCloud storage in your device's Settings.

Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of what our server holds about you, and to correct or delete it; write to [email protected] and we'll answer within 30 days. Depending on where you live, for example under the GDPR, you may also have the right to object to or restrict how we use your data, to take it elsewhere, and to complain to your data protection authority.

We handle your data to provide the features you ask for, which is our agreement with you, and to keep Jade secure, which is our legitimate interest. Notifications and Sign in with Apple are up to you, and you can turn them off at any time.

Jade is for a general audience and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13, or the age your country sets. If you think a child has given us personal data, write to [email protected] and we'll delete it.

When what Jade does with data changes, this policy changes with it. The date at the top says when it last did; for a change that matters, we'll tell you in the app or in the release notes before it takes effect.
